The Great Lines

The Great Lines is an exhibition developed by artist Karen Rann that explores the invention of contour lines by Newcastle-born mathematician Charles Hutton.  Learn about the curious story of their early use through a display of original maps, books and artworks by the artist.

Karen Rann has visited places first mapped, uncovered the maps themselves (where they still exist) and discovered the stories of the people who created them.  Through walking, writing and creating artwork in response, Karen has developed this exhibition, a blog and a publication (in progress).
