These programmes aim to offer accessible, inspiring, and inclusive artistic opportunities that foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of connection to both the arts and the natural environment.
Almost every artist involved with VARC has contributed to this work, offering workshops and site-specific projects tailored to the needs of individual schools or visiting groups. VARC has also employed a number of local freelance artists to deliver bespoke activities such as glass making or wood carving. Highgreen has provided a unique setting for these experiences, allowing students to explore the grounds, build dens, and engage with outdoor creative activities such as campfires and den building, combining artistic practice with hands-on engagement in nature.
Some projects have taken place on school premises, enabling schools to benefit from specialist artistic expertise that might not otherwise be accessible. These sessions have included collaborative artwork, sensory exploration, and creative projects that respond to the school environment, curriculum, and students’ specific needs.
Schools and organisations that have benefited from VARC’s SEN and SEND programmes include:
- The Grove School, Berwick
- Priory School, Hexham
- Keelman’s School, Hebburn
- Thornhill Park School, Sunderland
- Percy Hedley School, Newcastle upon Tyne
- Thomas Bewick School, Newcastle upon Tyne
- FLOW, North Tyneside
- Pathways4All, North Tyneside
- New Warlands Farm, County Durham
- Gateway Into the Community, Hexham
- Arcadia, Newcastle upon Tyne
VARC is particularly grateful for the additional funding and support that has enabled the continuation of this vital strand of work, with special thanks to Gillian Dickinson Trust and SCREAM for their contributions.
