WALK ON

June – September 2013

Walk On: Art-Walking Northumberland was part of an exciting region-wide season of art-walking. One of the highlights was an art-walking weekend at Highgreen in Tarset, 13th and 14th July. Other highlights included a major touring exhibition, WALK ON, which opened 1st June at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, and a symposium, ON WALKING, hosted by the University of Sunderland on 28th – 29th June. Showing at Customs House, South Shields, 8th June – 21st July, was an exhibition of Mike Collier’s work on art and walking, The Resilience of the Wild.

Also as part of this season on art-walking, a number of satellite venues, including National Trust’s Wallington Hall, Kielder Castle and Berwick Gymnasium, hosted exciting one-off artists’ projects and exhibitions, some specially commissioned for this event and focusing on experiences of walking explored by artists.

Funding for the event was made available through the Rural Development Programme for England which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union and from Arts Council England. Substantial support was also generously given by Art Circuit Touring Exhibitions, WALK, Highgreen Estate and Artangel.
